Hyalgan injection

When every step hurts, HYALGAN helps you move with comfort again.

What is Hyalgan injection?

HYALGAN is indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative nonpharmacologic therapy and to simple analgesics.

Who is a candidate?

HYALGAN is a treatment option for people who do not get adequate pain relief from simple painkillers or from exercise and physical therapy. HYALGAN injections can be used in addition to prescription pain relievers.

What to Expect

During Your Treatment

1

During your procedure
  • To begin, your knee is numbed with a local anesthetic.
  • A needle is carefully inserted into your knee joint.
  • The doctor uses a fluoroscope to watch the needle inside your knee.
  • To make sure the needle is in the right place, the doctor injects some dye.
  • It shows up clearly on the fluoroscope. The doctor makes sure the dye enters the space around the joint.
  • It’s replaced with a syringe of HYALGAN.
  • The doctor injects it into your joint.
  • It bonds with the knee’s synovial fluid.

2

After your procedure
  • After the injection, your knee is bandaged. A series of five HYALGAN injections will complete your regimen.
  • You’ll get one each week.
  • Pain relief usually begins after the third injection, and it can last for up to six months.

3

What are the risks?
  • As with any procedure involving a needle, there is a rare chance of infection, bleeding, allergic reaction and nerve damage.
  • Complications are extremely rare. Talk with your provider if you have specific questions about the risk of your procedure.
