What is Stellate Ganglion Block?

A Stellate Ganglion Block is an injection used to block the sympathetic nerves located on either side of the voice box in the neck. The procedure can be used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and can be effective in reducing pain and swelling while increasing mobility.

Who is a candidate?

Stellate Ganglion Block is used to diagnose or treat circulation problems:

  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
  • Causalgia
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome type I or II
  • Herpes Zoster Infection (Shingles)
  • Phantom Limb Pain

What to Expect

During Your Treatment

During the procedure
  • You will receive the Stellate Ganglion Block while you are awake, you will be asked to remove jewelry from around the head and neck area.
  • An X-ray machine wil be used to locate the stellate ganglion and a small amount of local anesthetic will be injected to numb the treatment site.
  • Using a  Fluoroscopy, a type of x-ray, about 5cc of a long acting local anesthetic will be slowly injected into two areas of the stellate ganglion.

After the procedure
  • Do not drive or do any rigorous activity for 24 hours after your stellate ganglion block.
  • Take it easy. You can return to your normal activities the next day.
  • When your voice returns to normal, you may begin to sip water through a straw and gradually work up to eating solid foods.

What are the risk
  • The risk of complications from a stellate ganglion block is very low.
  • However, there could be bruising or soreness at the injection site.
  • Serious complications, including infection, bleeding and nerve damage, are uncommon.
