QUTENZA® (capsaicin) 8% topical system is indicated in adults for the treatment of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and for neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) of the feet.
Diabetic nerve pain of the feet, also known as Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, occurs if nerves are damaged as a result of diabetes. Damaged nerves cannot correctly transmit signals from the skin to the brain, causing the signals to become exaggerated and create the debilitating pain in your feet.
Post-shingles nerve pain, also known as postherpetic neuralgia, occurs if nerves are damaged due to a previous herpes zoster infection, commonly referred to as shingles. Damaged nerves cannot correctly transmit signals from the skin to the brain, which can cause the chronic and debilitating pain you may be feeling.
The feet will be cleaned and examined for open wounds, cracks, and cuts. Qutenza patch/patches will be applied to the feet top and bottom and wrapped in medical bandages. Qutenza will need to set and rest for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes Qutenza will be removed and a cleaning gel will be applied and removed with a soap and water cleaning towel. Once the area is dry the patient is ready to go.
The area of irritation will be cleaned and examined for open wounds, cracks, and cuts. Qutenza patch/patches will be applied to the area of irritation on skin and wrapped in medical bandages. Qutenza will need to set and rest for 60 minutes. After the 60 minutes Qutenza will be removed and a cleaning gel will be applied and removed with a soap and water cleaning towel. Once the area is dry the patient is ready to go.
The area of application may be sensitive for a few days after, if the area is still sensitive after application apply cool water to feet. Warm water, exposed sun, and vigorous exercise is not advised for areas of application due to causing irritation.
Treatment with Qutenza may be repeated every three months or as warranted by the return of pain (not more frequently than every three months).
